Programme content

This 2-year programme contains 120 ECTS credit units and leads to the joint diploma of International Master of Science in Sustainable and Innovative Natural Resource Management and awards the EIT label. Language of instruction: English. The SINReM master programme is embedded in the International Training Centre of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering of Ghent University and the EIT Raw Materials Academy.

First year:

Students are taken through the value chain of raw materials, and introduced to the sustainability challenges of the circular economy. Students learn to develop novel technologies to recover and extract precious metals and raw materials from waste streams and learn to create new technologies to mine materials in a sustainable way. During the semester in Uppsala all students receive training in Entrepreneurship and are stimulated to excel in creativity with a entrepreneurial mindset and innovative problem-based technology development skills. All students move as a cohort between all three partner universities in the first year which has  significant networking and social cohesion advantages. (full programme below).

Second year:

The students can choose between three majors in their second year. At Ghent University (Belgium) the student gains a deep understanding of resource recovery from waste streams, sustainable materials and sustainable technologies. At Uppsala University (Sweden) the student chooses to increase their skills and knowledge in novel georesource exploration technologies. At TU Freiberg students receive profound insights in sustainable chemical and biotechnological processes in mining.
